Welcome to the NSSE Report Builder

The NSSE Report Builder is an interactive tool for participating institutions that instantly generates reports of your choosing. You can generate tables of Engagement Indicators or individual item frequencies that compare (a) subgroups of students within your institution, or (b) your students with students at other institutions based selected characteristics.

The following pages will guide you through five easy steps to filter the data and produce a report according to your selections:

The NSSE Report Builder currently includes data from NSSE administrations from 2009 to 2023.
The NSSE instrument has changed over time. All items are not available in all NSSE administrations. Item numbering reflects the most recent version of the survey.
We restrict frequency reports to five sets of items to maintain the speed of the Report Builder. Feel free to run additional reports and select other sets of items.

If you elect to combine multiple years of your institution's data and your analysis compares your students with students from other institutions, the comparison group will be restricted to the most recent survey administration.

If you choose to compare students within your institution, you will skip Step 3 (select comparison group) and proceed directly to Step 4 (select students).

Step 3: Select Comparison Group

Select an option to create a comparison group of institutions for your report. The "customize" option allows you to further refine the set of institutions in your comparison group by selecting institution characteristics within categories such as size, region, selectivity, etc. Select all U.S. and Canadian institutions. Select only U.S. institutions. Select only Canadian institutions. Customize by institution characteristics.

Checking a category restricts sample selection to institutions with valid values for that category—all others will be excluded.
To preserve the confidentiality of institution-specific results under the NSSE Participation Agreement, comparison groups in this Report Builder may only be created based on institutional characteristics. Unlike comparison group customization for the NSSE Institutional Report, individual institutions cannot be added or removed.
A minimum of five other institutions are required to create a comparison group.
Some criteria in combination include very few institutions. For example, you cannot create a comparison group of small or medium-sized public research universities.

Step 4: Select Students

Select whether you want a report for first-year students or seniors. The "customize" options allow you to further refine the sample by selecting characteristics within categories such as first-generation, age, major field category, etc.
